Beyond the Field Trip
Teaching and Learning in
Public Places
by Uma Krishnaswami
In a country rich in parks, museums, historic sites, and scenic areas, on the national, state, and local levels, the school "field trip" can mean so much more to students and teachers than the "nose-counting" exercise it often is. This resource shows ways to maximize the potential of site-based learning: teaching across the curriculum; writing workshops; investigative approaches; using the expertise of archaeologists, historians, and anthropologists; meeting the special needs of students; teaching resource stewardship; taking outcomes back to the community; are all coveredand more!
About the Author
A native of India, Uma Krishnaswami lives in New Mexico with her husband and son, and writes, teaches writing, and talks to schools and library groups across the country about writing and mythology. She has two other Linnet Books, Shower of Gold: Girls and Women in the Stories of India and The Broken Tusk: Stories of the Hindu God Ganesha, which was chosen for the Scientific American Young Readers Book Award in 1997.
